Ten Years of Awards: Oscar and Golden Globe Acting nominations from 1999-2008

The past decade, from 1999-2008, represents a pretty interesting and vital time in cinema history. In terms of who the Oscars and Golden Globes chose to nominate in their various acting categories, only 214 performers have the distinction of being a "nominee" or "winner" to boost their box office potential.

I came up with a points system to represent the combination of Best Actor / Actress and Best Supporting Actor / Actress wins and nominations that could have been accrued from both the Oscar and Golden Globe ceremonies. I believe even an Oscar nomination holds more kudos than a victory at the Globes (with a Globe Best Actor victory just about having the higher value than an Oscar Supporting nod!), so my points scale is as follows:

20 points - Oscar WIN for Best Actor / Actress
17 points - Oscar WIN for Best Supporting Actor / Actress
15 points - Oscar NOMINATION for Best Actor / Actress
13 points - Golden Globe WIN for Best Actor / Actress
12 points - Oscar NOMINATION for Best Supporting Actor / Actress
10 points - Golden Globe WIN for Best Supporting Actor / Actress
8 points - Golden Globe NOMINATION for Best Actor / Actress
5 points - Golden Globe NOMINATION for Best Supporting Actor / Actress

When you tally up the points, can you guess who has had the most Hollywood acclaim in the past decade? No, you probably can't!

Well, top of the list is Renee Zellweger! Her 107 points tally as follows:

In 2000

* 13 points
GLOBES WIN Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
NURSE BETTY

In 2001

* 8 points
GLOBES NOM Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
BRIDGET JONES' DIARY

* 15 points
OSCAR NOM Best Actress
BRIDGET JONES' DIARY

In 2002

* 13 points
GLOBES WIN Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
CHICAGO

* 15 points
OSCAR NOM Best Actress
CHICAGO

In 2003

* 10 points
GLOBES NOM Best Supporting Actress
COLD MOUNTAIN

* 17 points
OSCAR WIN Best Supporting Actress
COLD MOUNTAIN

In 2004

* 8 points
GLOBES NOM Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
BRIDGET JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON

In 2006

* 8 points
GLOBES NOM Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)
MISS POTTER

But is she really top of the tree at the start of 2009? Most of her awards success was between 2000-2003.

Right now in Hollywood, I believe there are certain actors and actresses who are "hot" and most likely to gain awards success. Many others are on the down slide, even if they had success a few years ago. How about those "one hit wonders" who had a great role, scooped up every award going, but seem destined to never repeat the acclaim? Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball" for example?
