AWARDS SEASON 1990

At the Awards ceremonies in early 1991, celebrating the cinematic performances of 1990, the big winner was Whoopi Goldberg, who took all three Best Supporting Actress awards for "Ghost". Jeremy Irons and Kathy Bates both took home the OSCAR and Golden Globe for "Reversal of Fortune" and "Misery" respectively.
The two leads of "Cinema Paradiso" (Philippe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio) took the male acting awards at the BAFTA's, while the other notable gongs went to Julia Roberts for "Pretty Woman" at the Globes, and Joe Pesci's supporting "Goodfellas" gangster at the OSCARS.

In total, 42 actors and actresses were nominated in 1990.

AWARDS SEASON 1989

At the Awards ceremonies in early 1990, celebrating the cinematic performances of 1989, the big winners were Daniel Day-Lewis and Jessica Tandy for their respective roles in "My Left Foot" and "Driving Miss Daisy". But Tandy had to wait until the following year to collect her BAFTA for the same role, while Day-Lewis lost out to Tom Cruise in "Born On The Fourth of July" at the Golden Globes. Michelle Pfeiffer picked up two awards for "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and "Dangerous Liaisons", while Denzel Washington's turn in "Glory" won two of the three Supporting Actor statues up for grabs. It was closer in the Supporting Actress category where Brenda Fricker ("My Left Foot") and Julia Roberts ("Steel Magnolias") took the OSCAR and Golden Globe respectively.

In total, 44 actors and actresses were nominated in 1989.
