AWARDS SEASON 1989

At the Awards ceremonies in early 1990, celebrating the cinematic performances of 1989, the big winners were Daniel Day-Lewis and Jessica Tandy for their respective roles in "My Left Foot" and "Driving Miss Daisy". But Tandy had to wait until the following year to collect her BAFTA for the same role, while Day-Lewis lost out to Tom Cruise in "Born On The Fourth of July" at the Golden Globes. Michelle Pfeiffer picked up two awards for "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and "Dangerous Liaisons", while Denzel Washington's turn in "Glory" won two of the three Supporting Actor statues up for grabs. It was closer in the Supporting Actress category where Brenda Fricker ("My Left Foot") and Julia Roberts ("Steel Magnolias") took the OSCAR and Golden Globe respectively.

In total, 44 actors and actresses were nominated in 1989.

The OSCARS, Golden Globes, and BAFTA's all have a Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress category. However, the Globes also have additional Best Actor & Actress categories for roles in Musical & Comedy films. Therefore an entire "awards season" for the three major ceremonies involves fourteen different awards on offer.
